Programs and People of Dallas Furniture Bank

Mission

The mission of Dallas Furniture Bank is to provide household furniture that meets basic living standards to individuals and families transitioning out of homelessness, escaping homes in crisis, fleeing natural disasters, or are otherwise in need of furniture assistance, restoring normalcy and independence.

Programs

Furniture for Families

Our core program, Furniture for Families allows individuals, couples, and families with children the opportunity to receive furniture for their new homes. Working with agency partners, DFB supplies basic furniture to those who have recovered from homelessness, escaped abuse, or are rebuilding after disaster.

In 2023, Dallas Furniture Bank distributed 16,014 pieces of furniture to 1,164 families.

Beds4Kidz

Our Beds4Kidz program works with school districts across North Texas to supply new, complete beds (including mattress, box springs, bedding, and pillows) to children who otherwise would not have their own bed. School employees and DFB partner agencies refer dozens of children per month who are sleeping on the floor, sleeping on couches, dragging used mattresses off the street, or sleeping with several other children in one bed.

In 2023, Beds4Kidz supplied 468 beds to children.

History

Dallas Furniture Bank was established in 2003 in response to the lack of furniture resources for homeless people who secure housing.

Before DFB, many of these families and individuals had no furniture to move into their new homes and were forced to sleep and eat on the floor and exist daily in a barren place--conditions not even experienced in their shelter living.

The effort was spearheaded by long-time friends and community volunteers Sheryl Fields Bogen and Jerry Szor. They surveyed many social service agencies in Dallas, as well as potential funding sources. Everyone agreed that the needs were great and no other organization or agency was equipped to respond.

A Letter from our Founders

Dear Friends of Dallas Furniture Bank,

We are so pleased about the positive impact Dallas Furniture Bank (DFB) has had on the 15,000 individuals it has served since 2003. One always hears about the vibrancy of Dallas, yet over 20% of OUR CITY’s people live below THE POVERTY LINE and 250,000 children sleep on the floor every night. THIS IS WHY DFB must continue to grow and serve more individuals and families in need! We started the agency after recognizing there was a gap in the continuum of services for families and individuals transitioning out of homelessness or otherwise in need of household furniture. Now partnering with over 40 nonprofit agencies, Dallas Furniture Bank not only provides basic household furniture but also furnishes hope as well! DFB transforms an empty apartment or house into a new home, providing stability and increasing our clients’ sense of well-being and continued success.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported Dallas Furniture Bank over the years. Your contributions and volunteer hours have helped create a vibrant agency. You have helped make our vision and mission possible. And we look forward to assisting even more people TO succeed in the future!

Sincerely,

Sheryl Fields Bogen and Jerry Szor
